Frances Fleischer Fisher, age 102, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2023. She was born in New York City, NY on June 3, 1921, to Harold and Rose (Zodikoff) Fleischer and married Eugene Fisher on November 22, 1942 in Chicago, IL. Together they had three children. Family mattered more than anything. Fran earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Illinois where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude. She later earned a Master of Arts Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Western Michigan University. Mrs. Fisher was employed as a School Guidance Counselor and eventually Head Counselor for Muskegon High School for 25 years from 1963 until she retired in 1988. Following her retirement, for 25 years, she had a private counseling practice working with college bound students. Many students held Mrs. Fisher fondly in their hearts for altering the course of their lives by fortifying their self-esteem and stewarding their pursuit of higher education.

Fran was actively involved for more than 65 years in numerous organizations in Muskegon from the time she came to Muskegon in 1946. She was a volunteer at the Muskegon Museum of Art including being the longest member of Friends of Art (1946), a Docent Emeritus, and both a financial supporter and fund raiser. A voracious reader, Fran was very involved with the Hackley Public Library including leading for many years the Ulysses Group and Co-Leader of the Great Books Program. She was a longtime board member of the Muskegon County Library Board. She also tutored adult readers through Project Literacy and Read Muskegon. She served on the Churchill School Board of Education and was instrumental in the establishment of the Mona Shores School District and, later, Mona Shores High School in 1962. She was a longtime active member of Temple B'Nai Israel.

In 1993, Fran was an honoree by the Friends of Hackley Library for the Service to the Humanities Award. In 2004, she was honored by Muskegon Community College as a Woman of Accomplishment as well as being given the Richard Charles Ford Award by the Muskegon Arts and Humanities Festival. Fran Fisher was highly regarded as a woman of integrity in all her work. She was a role model for many, particularly as a woman from the 1950s on who chose to balance her career, her family and serving as an active volunteer and leader in the community. She brought the highest work ethic to all her endeavors. She had an insatiable intellectual curiosity. She was both an excellent writer and speaker. She loved the arts, politics, fashion, the latest technology and was known for her signature style through her final days. She was a talented knitter, painter and jeweler. She loved to travel and made many international trips. She was kind, generous and a wonderful listener. She cared deeply about those in the greatest need. Fran had wonderful friendships, some of her closest for many decades. An unforgettable woman, Fran always left an impression.
