Mrs. Evamarie "Sammy" Andersen, teacher for many years at Ferrysburg and Lake Hills Schools, age 87, died August 25, 2008, in Grand Haven where she resided since 1950. "Sammy" was born August 7, 1921, in Lakeside, Muskegon, a daughter of Oscar and Gerda (Anderson) Samuelson. Following graduation from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, Sammy returned to Muskegon where she was employed by Capitol Airlines prior to her marriage to Franklin Andersen in 1950. Sammy found great challenge and satisfaction in her nearly 30 years as a teacher of first, second, and third graders. She saw each child as an individual, believed each one capable of learning, and always sought better ways to help each one succeed. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven and the Jane Bottje Circle. She will be remembered by her family for her optimism and kindness, patience and determination, but perhaps most of all as someone who was fun and simply a pleasure to be with. Sammy was preceded in death by her sister, Genevieve, who died in her youth; her brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Wesley and Sylvia Samuelson; and a favorite nephew, Peter Samuelson. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Franklin Andersen; her daughters and their husbands, Paula and Lewis Tysman of Richland and Laura Andersen and Jackson Scholl of Kalamazoo; her grandchildren, Robert, John, and Marie Tysman, all of Richland, Anders Scholl of New York City, and Clara Scholl and her husband, Attila Nagy, of Washington, D.C.; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral service for Sammy will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 5, in the East chapel of VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Karin Fowler officiating. Friends may meet with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment has taken place with family present at Lakeside Cemetery. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Sanctuary at the Shore, Seville Residence (a Sawyer Home), and Hospice of North Ottawa Community, all of whom provided kind and loving care during the past few months.
