Brockopp, Rev.
Elroy "Roy" David
Grand Haven, Michigan
Rev. Elroy (Roy) David Brockopp was united with Christ through Holy Baptism and being confident of the resurrection to eternal life entered his eternal home on February 1, 2025. Born in Golden, Illinois on October 21, 1925 to Rev. William and Martha Brockopp. This location was his father's first call to serve a small rural congregation after graduation from the seminary. Later, the family moved to Glidden, Wisconsin where Roy grew up. Roy's emphasis growing up was on music, winning several regional awards. He was drafted near the close of WWII and served in the Alaskan Headquarters, Department of the Army. Upon discharge, he continued his studies at Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. He married Ruth Krugler on June 11, 1949.
Roy's vicarage was in Marshfield, Wisconsin where their first child, Judy was born. Upon graduation from the Seminary, his first call was to Coldwater, Michigan, the birthplace of his children, Karen, Jim and Beth. Several years later he served at St. James Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In 1970 Roy accepted the call to become the Director of the Council of Lutheran Churches in St. Louis, Missouri. This position gave him the opportunity to implement programs so Lutheran congregations could more effectively serve their community. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Lutheran Altenheim Society and was responsible for Outreach Ministries.
Upon retiring in 1990, he served the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod part-time for 12 years, giving lectures, leading workshops and creating programs to emphasize resources and needs of older adults.
Roy was deeply grateful for the 75 years of marriage to Ruth. They enjoyed camping, biking, hiking, swimming and traveling together. Roy also facilitated tour groups to Germany; highlighting the Passion Play at Oberammergau. Upon his retirement many trips were made to Florida. Dance lessons and Friday night dancing were also highlights.
His deep love and concern for people created many long-lasting connections. He will be deeply missed. Roy is now rejoicing with others in heaven and with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
