BUCKLEY, MISS ELIZABETH ANN Lt.Cmdr USN Ret. North Muskegon Miss Elizabeth A. Buckley, Lt.Cdmr USN Ret., age 89, died Saturday, January 25, 2003. She was born in Grand Rapids, MI on October 21, 1913 to Phillip W. & Elizabeth A. Doran Buckley. Miss Buckley had been a surgical nurse with the United States Navy, serving in W.W. II and the Korean Conflict, attaining the final grade of Lieutenant Commander before retiring from her military career on November 26, 1961. During retirement years in San Diego, she was active in a myriad of civic, church and Navy activities. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, received her B.A. and M.A. in Nursing Science from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. Miss Buckley was also a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and later was an instructor at both Mercy and Hackley Hospital Schools of Nursing. She was also Director of Nursing Education at St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Denver, CO, U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA and was the senior nurse on the USS Mann, during the Korean Conflict. Elizabeth assisted in the establishment of the Navy Nurse Cadet Corps and the Women's Overseas Service League. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Naval Nurse Corps Association, Naval Reserve Officers Association and was a life member of the Retired Naval Officers Association and the American Women's League in San Diego, the Women's Overseas Association, serving as President, Secretary and Chairman of several committees. She also served as President of the Northwestern Michigan League of Nursing Education and the Muskegon District Nurses Association. SURVIVORS 3 sisters, Mary Ellen Buckley, Helen M. Perri, Dorothea M. Perri, all of North Muskegon; 1 brother, M. Phillip Sis Buckley of Norton Shores; 1 brother in law, Alfred J. Perri of North Muskegon; 1 sister in law, Monica A. Buckley of Muskegon; also several nieces and nephews; her cousin, Marlene Leo Kuhn of Angola, IN; She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Bernadine Buckley Carlson and Alice Buckley Perri; 2 brothers, William K. Buckley and Patrick John Buckley; 1 niece, Elizabeth Carlson. FUNERAL MASS The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, January 29, 2003, 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Ernest Bernott presiding. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, with Military Rites by Muskegon County Council of Veterans.
