Mr. Edward W. Funk, age 86, of Muskegon, passed away Friday evening, March 14, 2008 at Poppen Hospice House in Fruitport. He was born on March 17, 1921 in Dorr, MI to the late Anton and Annie (Thomas) Funk. He married Miss Gail G. McDowell on July 3, 1943. Ed served in the United States Army as a Sergeant during WWII. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart with Clusters, and several other awards. Ed owned Auto Body Clinic from 1955 to 1983 and, also, Shoreline Service from 1979 to 1985. He and Gail were members of St. Francis de Sales Parish. They enjoyed traveling and together they gave generously of their time and talents to many organizations. Ed was a past president and a Man of the Year of the Serra Club. Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Harrell, in 1996; and two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Gail; children: Kathleen (Bill) Brown of Dayton, OH, Jeff Harrell of Grand Haven, William E. (Ann) Funk Of Muskegon, Clifford (Shellee) Funk of Belding, and Phyllis (Jamie) Riley of Lansing; 15 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Parish, 2929 McCracken Ave., Muskegon with Father Thomas Simons officiating. Military Honors immediately after the service at St. Mary's Cemetery, Laketon Ave. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, March 19th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m., at Ever Rest Funeral Home and Chapel, 1783 E. Keating Ave., Muskegon, and one hour prior to Ed's service Thursday at the church (from 10 to 11). Memorial contributions may be directed to Muskegon County Catholic Education Foundation or Poppen Hospice House.
