Edith Jonette "Jonni" Klap of Grand Haven, MI, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at American House Assisted Living. She was born on November 23, 1940 in Grand Rapids,MI to Benton & Evelyn (Stacey) Thurston.
Jonni graduated from South High School in Grand Rapids and earned her teaching degree from Michigan State University. She began her career as a teacher before joining her husband at Witters & Klap Insurance. Together they built the largest, at the time, RV, motorcycle and personal watercraft general insurance agency in Michigan, growing to include over 350 sub-agencies across the state.
Jonni was an active and vibrant member of her community. She. Was known as the enthusiastic "Hobo party host", organizing an annual festive gathering for friends from school and work circles. She served as an East Hills Tennis Pro, giving lessons and volunteered with Ski Patrol at the Grand Rapids Ski Club. She also dedicated time as a volunteer at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. In her later years, she continued to nurture lifelong friendships by hosting an annual gathering of girlfriends on the beaches of Lake Michigan, where they shared stories, laughter and wine. She affectionately called this beloved group the "Used Beach Bunnies" Jonni enjoyed painting with watercolors and growing beautiful gardens.
Jonni is survived by her son Fletcher Klap and daughter Stacey (Sam) Klukos, her granddaughter Alexa Buitendyk and great-granddaughter Nina, sisters Jane Greenman, Jackie (Paul) Blackport and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John "Jack" Klap and her youngest son, Jordan Klap and sister Joann Thurston.
A celebration of life will be on May 15, 2026 from 2pm to 4pm at the American Legion, Grand Haven , MI.
