Dorothy L. Miller Profile Photo

On March 18, Dorothy passed away peacefully in the home of her daughter and family in Fort Washington, Maryland. Dorothy was born in Ripley, Tennessee, on December 14, 1922, 85 years ago. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at the former Heritage Hospital in Muskegon Heights until her retirement. She was a proud grandmother of two, an avid walker, and always greeted everyone with a smile. Dorothy rarely went anywhere in Muskegon without seeing someone she knew, from her many years of working as a nurse, attending Zion Baptist Church, and living in the community. Dorothy was first and foremost a mother. While reading a magazine in 1959, Dorothy came on an article describing how homes in this country were being found for the unwanted children of foreign lands through efforts of International Social Service. Having no children, Dorothy wrote to the agency, offering to adopt a Korean child. Dorothy's request was answered in November 1960, when she and her late husband Chris went to Chicago to meet their new son Kevin and bring him home. Dorothy and Chris were so happy they moved quickly to adopt a second child, a girl, Tamara who arrived in April 1962. Dorothy and Chris not only found happiness as parents but also opened a new world of opportunity and a much brighter future for their children who faced severe hardship..the life of orphans in a land where they were unwanted. Dorothy leaves cherished memories with her children Kevin Miller and Tamara Miller; granddaughter Tamara Masciola (age 9); grandson Kevin Masciola (age 6) who was recently adopted by Tamara and her husband Peter; Mrs. Eddie Beal her aunt and lifelong best friend; and a host of relatives and many friends. We will all miss Dorothy dearly. A memorial service will be held at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, 2188 Remembrance Drive, Muskegon, Michigan, on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 3pm with interment, followed with repast at 2433 8th St., Muskegon Heights, Michigan.
