Doris M. Tornga, age 81, of Grand Haven passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids. She was born August 31, 1925 in Muskegon to John and Mattie (Burgess) Kooi. She married Sidney Tornga September 6, 1947 in Muskegon and moved to this area from Chicago in l953. Mrs. Tornga worked at Continental Motors in Muskegon prior to going to the Englewood School of Nursing in the Cadet Nursing Program with her good friend, Ann (Tanis) Pruim. She graduated in 1947, a Registered Nurse, and worked at Hackley Hospital. She had been a member of Unity Reformed Church in Muskegon, and was a long-time member of Ferrysburg Community Church, where she served her church faithfully. She also served as a volunteer over the years at Red Cross Blood Bank, the Nearly New Shop, and Grand Haven Christian School Auxiliary. She also traveled on several mission trips utilizing her nursing skills, and enjoyed knitting, sewing and playing the piano. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Dan) DeVries, Ft. Wayne, IN and Lois (Phillip) Hallenback, Grand Haven; four sons, Leslie (Ola) Tornga, Twin Lake, Timothy (Sharon) Tornga, Grand Rapids, Charles (Beth) Tornga, Bel Air, Maryland, and Steven (Brenda) Tornga, Boise, Idaho; two sisters, Lila (Kenneth) Green, Fruitport, MI and Lakeland, Florida, and Ardis (Ron) Erickson, North Port, Florida; one brother-in-law, Frank Fazakerly, Muskegon; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Sidney, in 1992, her sister June Fazakerly, and brother Charles Kooi. The funeral service for Doris M. Tornga will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at Ferrysburg Community Church with the Reverend Nathan Visker officiating. Friends may meet the family on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Those desiring a memorial are asked to consider Grand Haven Christian School.
