Donavan H. "Red" McCarthy McCARTHY, MR. DONAVAN H. "RED" Spring Valley, CA Donavan Harold "Red" McCarthy, 70, passed away January 17, 2006 at his home in Spring Valley, CA following a short illness. Born in Copemish, MI on November 15, 1935 to Vivian and Ellsworth McCarthy, Don lived most of his life in Muskegon and Whitehall. After graduating from Muskegon High School, he served in the U.S. Navy from September, 1955 until September, 1959. While stationed in Boston, MA, Don met and married Angela (Angel) Kovacev on October 25, 1959. As he raised his family, he worked as an electrician and programmer for several companies. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, which he shared with his children and grandchildren as well as other family members and friends. These included fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was a member of One in Christ Church of National City, CA and had been an Alcoholics Anonymous member for the past 35 years. FAMILY Don is survived by his wife, Angel; four children, Donna (Paul) Wright of Shelby, Scott (Lisa) McCarthy of Montague, Paul (Karen) McCarthy of LaMesa, CA, and Joyce (Ken) McKugh of Oxford, England; grandchildren, Megan and Jason of Montague, and Sean, Ryan, Brian, and Ian of LaMesa, CA; a brother, E. Allen (Linda) McCarthy of Twin Lake; a sister, Judith McCarthy of Ocean Beach, CA; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special long-time friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda McCarthy. SERVICE A memorial service was held on Mount Helix in CA on Friday, January 20 with Rev. James "Uncle Jim" Kilensky officiating. Family members and friends contributed to the service including his grandson, Brian, who played a trumpet solo. A military service was held on Monday, January 30, at Fort Rosecrans in Point Loma, CA, where Taps was played on trumpets by his grandsons, Sean and Brian.
