Donald "Puzz" Boorman, age 92, passed peacefully after a courageous journey with dementia, surrounded by the love of his family.
Don was born on September 28, 1933, to Lucile "Tootie" Wilke and grew up as an only child, surrounded by many amazing cousins, and was raised by a village of women, including his grandmother, Aunt Betty Bletsch, and mom. From an early age, he showed the grit, humor, and curiosity that would define his life. He married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Brunson, the girl he'd loved since kindergarten, when he famously threw her mittens into the creek. They graduated together from North Muskegon High School and went on to share a lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure.
Together, Don and Shirley raised two beautiful children: Donald (Eilleen Boone) Boorman and Sandra (David Bennett) Wagenmaker. Their marriage was a true partnership, full of movement, projects, road trips, and joy. Don never sat still.
He dedicated 37 years of hard work to Shaw Walker before retiring, though "retiring" never really suited him. His entire life consisted of building homes until he was mortgage-free, constructing dune buggies, ice shanties, and campers, installing metal roofs well ahead of his time, traveling, watching baseball, and always finding the next thing to fix, build, or improve.
Some of Don's most cherished moments were spent with his grandchildren on trips to Pleasure Island, teaching the great-grandchildren how to garden, Cole how to build, and playing cards with Rick, Emma, and Sadie, where he created memories that will live on for generations.
Don was known for his sharp wit and unforgettable one-liners. His favorite sayings included, "That'll frost your hind end," and "They're like a fart in a windstorm," always delivered with perfect timing and a grin.
Don was preceded in death by his mother; his in-laws; his son-in-law, Jack Wagenmaker; and his grandson, Jeremy Berwald.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Boorman; his children, Donald (Eilleen Boone) Boorman and Sandra (David Bennett) Wagenmaker; and his grandchildren, Rick Boorman, Dave (Savana Rake) Boorman, Joanna (Joseph) Lasser, and Julie (Landon) Sustaita.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Lauren (Tristan) Rust, Cole (Grace) Rust, Emma Boorman, Sadie Boorman, Kamron Boorman, Hannah Christensen, Juliana Cowen, Macy Lasser, Max Lasser, Derek Berwald, Angel Fox, and Jackson Berwald, as well as many great-great-grandchildren, including Miss Rylee, who has spent every week with him keeping him on his toes as long as she could.
Don's legacy is one of motion, loyalty, laughter, and love. He built things that lasted, like homes, memories, and a family that will forever feel his presence in every story told and every project begun.
