Daniel Roman Coon
September 13, 1959 - October 11, 2026
Daniel Roman Coon, age 67, of Muskegon, Michigan, passed away on October 11, 2026, at Trinity Health Muskegon following a courageous two-year battle with multiple health challenges.
Dan grew up in West Michigan, attending Grand Haven schools. While he spent many years working in factory assembly, music was his true life's calling. A gifted singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bassist, Dan earned a Michigan songwriting award and recorded an album in Nashville alongside Tom Bourne and Jimmy Smith. Known throughout the West Michigan music scene for his rich country sound inspired by Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, Dan fronted and performed with numerous groups over the decades, including Dan Coon and the Renegades, Eagle River Band, and Country Gold, frequently rocking stages like Deano's.
Off stage, Dan loved the quiet outdoors-especially camping and fishing on small lakes around Twin Lake from friends' boats. He had a great sense of humor, loved a good jam session with fellow musicians, and put hot sauce on just about everything.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Julia (John) Cooper; son, Dan Coon; his cherished grandchildren, Payton, Anabelle, and Charlotte Cooper; his brother, Larry (Linda) Coon; his nephew, Rick Coon; his cousin and lifelong best friend, Ted (Carol) Tyler; his cousin, Darlene Storm; and his long-time companion and devoted friend, Susan "Sue" Shukis. He is also remembered by his extended family, numerous cousins, and a vast community of musical brothers and sisters.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gertrude "Gertie" (Tyler) Coon, and his brother, William "Willie" Coon Jr.
A Celebration of Life featuring a musician's jam session and luncheon will take place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at VFW Lt. Clement F Derezinski Post #7729 - 6285 E. Apple Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49442. Friends and fellow musicians are warmly invited to attend, share memories, and bring an instrument or song to celebrate Dan's life and music.
Dan will be laid to rest near his parents at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to assist the family with final expenses are appreciated.
