Cynthia Date Beal

Cynthia "Cynie" Beal (Date) passed away after a two-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born October 6, 1948, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and although she resided most of her life in Michigan, she always remained a proud New Englander. Portsmouth always held a special place in her heart, and she returned often to visit family and friends, spend time at Wallis Sands Beach, and visit one of her favorite restaurants, The Ice House.

In March 1969, Cynie married the love of her life, Anthony "Andy" Beal. Together, they shared 57 years of marriage filled with family, travel, and adventure.

Cynie earned her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and began her career with Michigan Bell. She later returned to MSU, earning a master's degree in Labor and Industrial Relations. She spent much of her career as a labor representative for the Michigan Corrections Organization, where she was a dedicated advocate for workers and union rights. Her commitment to organized labor and fair treatment for working people remained important to her throughout her life.

An avid reader and writer, Cynie volunteered with WKAR, reading on the radio for the visually impaired. She also loved to travel, visiting Europe several times and taking numerous cruises with Andy. One of the highlights of her life was their three-month around-the-world cruise in 2019 to celebrate their 50th anniversary, which included the Seychelles, Australia and destinations throughout Southeast Asia.

Closer to home, Cynie and Andy were avid MSU Spartan fans and loved their home and neighborhood in Lansing MI. They were longtime regulars at the Soup Spoon Café, where they spent nearly 20 years enjoying Friday meals and friendships with the staff, whom Cynie often brought flowers.

Cynie is survived by her husband, Andy; daughter, Natalia; granddaughters, Cassie and Scarlett; brothers, Todd (Kay) Date and Terry Date; special sister-in-law, Ellen Beal; special niece, Elizabeth Beal; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cynthia and Duane Date Sr., and her brothers, Duane Date and Darryl Date.
