Horsly, Mrs. Constance Carol Muskegon, Michigan Described by many as never having a mean bone in her body, Constance "Connie" Carol Horsly had the biggest heart and lived her life caring for all those around her. Connie touched the hearts and lives of so many people: family members, friends, children, and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed, but the memories she created for those who knew and loved her will live on forever. Life in the 1930s was not always easy. The decade started out reeling from the effects of the stock market crash that occurred at the end of 1929, thus beginning The Great Depression. Those living in the Plains continued to suffer from the worst drought in American history. In a time when funds were scarce, families passed the time listening to radio programs; nearly 40% of American households owned a radio. Amidst all this turmoil, parents Carl and Julia (Soful) Carpenter welcomed their third child, Constance, on September 7, 1938. Although she was only the third child, Connie would go on to have a total of eight siblings. Three brothers-Norman, John, Marty and five sisters- Barb, Charmaine, Susie, Janine, Diane. Connie's father, Carl, worked as a truck driver for the Lange Moving Company. The family grew up in the Lakeside neighborhood of Muskegon, MI where Connie attended schools in the Muskegon Heights school district. During her time working as a car hop waitress at A&W, Connie met the man she would ultimately fall in love with, Richard "Dick" Horsly. Dick was home on leave from the Air Force; once Dick completed his duties, he returned to Muskegon where he proceeded to fall in love with Connie. The two became a married couple on February 5, 1959. Connie's five-year-old sister, Diane, was extremely attached to her. For this reason, Diane came to live with Connie and Dick and the couple ended up raising the young girl as their own daughter. Connie and Dick also had two sons together: Rick and Troy. The young family lived in several different houses in the Lakeside area until settling into a home on Mann Street where they lived for the next 33 years. Connie worked at several different factories throughout her life including Brenneman's, Midwest Spring, and Michigan Spring. Husband, Dick, found work at Shaw Walker. Connie and Dick would often take the kids to Cedar Point and Mackinaw Island for fun family trips. They also owned some property on Campbell Lake, north of Hesperia, where they kept a trailer. Many memories were made there with the three children over the years, and Dick would always take the two boys hunting and fishing. Frequent visits to attend family gatherings in Kentucky, where Dick's relatives lived, was another source of family vacations while the kids were growing up. After all her kids had grown, Connie ran a catering business on the side with her daughter, Diane. Working at the A&W that her daughter took over was also something that Connie enjoyed doing. Once Connie retired from the shop, it gave her more time to babysit her beloved grandchildren and tend to the roses in her beautiful garden. Connie and Dick enjoyed spending all the time they could with the grandkids taking them to the movies, inviting them for sleepovers, and going on fun shopping excursions to Etterman's Grocery Store. She also loved to cook, bake, and was an avid QVC shopper. Although she was retired, Connie still worked part-time for Orchard View Schools as a playground supervisor and in the school's lunchroom. She loved seeing all the smiling faces on so many children. When both she and Dick retired, the two realized they didn't need so much space anymore and sold their home. The happy couple moved into an apartment at Barclay Village where they both lived for the remainder of their lives. They loved to take trips around the country with the Orchard Views Travelers. The group traveled to places like Florida and Branson, Missouri. Once Dick developed some health issues, Connie lovingly took care of him until his death in 2016. Although her loving husband had passed, Connie continued to live in the apartment and enjoyed spending time with the Gazebo Ladies and with her nine grandchildren. Tragically, Connie was eventually diagnosed with cancer; after a short battle though, the disease brought an end to her life. Connie passed away surrounded by the ones she cherished most-her family. Connie was always caring for others and gave so much of her time selflessly to all those surrounding her. The children at Orchard View Schools will miss seeing her smiling face on the playground and in the lunchroom. Her children and grandchildren will miss all the precious time spent together. Connie's kindness was far-reaching, and her huge heart always had room for more love to go around. As the wonderful Mother Teresa once said, "Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." Connie certainly lived her life spreading love and kindness no matter where she went.
