Mr. Charles "Charlie" S. Russell, age 91, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008 in Muskegon. He was born April 29, 1917 in Old Town, Maine to Charles and Gem (Coombs) Russell. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 as a Chemical Engineer. He started working for S.D. Warren Paper Company in 1939, and transferred to Muskegon in 1954 where he retired as Production Manager after 40 years. Mr. Russell was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving between 1943-1946 in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was active on many community boards with special interest in the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. Other interests included: being accomplished at cutting gemstones and made many beautiful gifts for friends and family, ham operator with many contacts around the globe, enjoyed building model railroads, a passion he shared with his son-in-law Rick, very active as Elder and Clerk of Session at the First Presbyterian Church. He was a loving husband, father and thoroughly enjoyed the role of grandfather and great-grandfather, and leaves behind a lasting memory of laughter. On July 21, 1941 he married the former Edythe Newcomb in Brewer, Maine and she preceded him in death in 2006. SURVIVORS include 2 daughters, Carolyn (John) Mixer of Muskegon and Mary Ellen (Richard) Wright of Burke, VA; 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. MEMORIAL SERVICES will be 11 AM Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Fred R. Halde officiating. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in West Bangor, Maine. Memorial Contributions to First Presbyterian Memorial Fund, The Hume Home of Muskegon Assisted Living and Muskegon-Oceana Chapter of the American Red Cross will be appreciated.
