MISNER, MR. CHARLES D. Grand Haven Mr.Charles D. Misner lost his life to cancer Sunday, September 23, 2007. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Jill (Alms) Misner, his son David C. Misner and Daughter-in-law Della (Johnson) Misner, daughter Aimee Misner Wilson, son-in-law David S. Wilson, granddaughter Sophia Hope Wilson, grandson Nicholas Charles Wilson, sisters Ann Hickey, Nora Hickey and Mary Gren, brother Fred Hickey, sisters-in-law Judy (Lester) Hoyle, Joyce (Chip) Alms Ransford, 3 grandnieces and countless friends. Charlie was born in Grand Haven, Michigan on September 26, 1940 to Donald Misner and Betty (Olsen) Misner. A 3rd generation Grand Haven resident, he loved Lake Michigan, canoeing local rivers, and the local history of the city and surrounding areas. He was keenly intelligent with a dry wit and a prodigious memory for jokes to fit any situation. He kept his sense of humor and passion for acquiring knowledge until the very end of his life. His interests were legion, including collecting and reading all kinds of books, artistic endeavors such as pottery, weaving, creating stained glass works, building musical instruments and other forms of woodworking. He enjoyed foreign and independent films, classic sport cars, model railroading, U of M football, and travel; particularly to Chicago, as well as farther afield. Language and etymology fascinated Charlie. During his life he studied and knew a sampling of such languages as Latin, Greek, Russian, French, German, Irish, Basque, Inuit, Icelandic, and Klingon. He was a talented musician throughout his life. His love of music, both classical and jazz, inspired other musicians and caused him to form his own musical groups such as a woodwind quintet and a trio, as well as performing with many other local symphonies, symphonic bands and other smaller groups. He loved to discuss, perform and experience music and played the piano, clarinet, flute and bassoon, as well as any obscure or historical instrument he could find. A true supporter of local talent, Charlie was especially appreciated by our excellent local authors, illustrators and poets, arranging author and illustrator events, poetry readings and the like through his much-enjoyed job at The Bookman bookstore. All of Charlie's interests, passions and hobbies had one thing in common; whatever the endeavor, he effortlessly gained new friends. Attracted by his humor, obvious zest for life and his genuine interest in anyone and everything, Charlie's friends were as many and varied as his interests. Charlie's family was especially important to him and he was a loving son, devoted husband, inspiring father and father-in-law, a caring older brother and a fond uncle. He took special delight in his adored grandchildren. Charlie was an unwavering light in many lives and, like a light extinguished, he will be deeply missed by all who were illuminated and warmed by him.
