Mr. Charles H. Curtis, age 78, passed away Saturday morning at a Muskegon Hospital following a short illness. Charles was born in Vicksburg, MO on May 17, 1929 the 2nd of ten children to Milburn and Clara May (Lipsey) Curtis. Charles was a decorated veteran of the Korean War where he served two tours of duty and received the Purple Heart. Following service to his country, Charles married the former Joyce M. Johnson in July 1952 and moved to Muskegon in 1956. Mr. Curtis was the former Chief of Police for the City of Roosevelt Park and in 1969 accepted the position of Police Chief for the City of Norton Shores. Chief Curtis retired in 1984. Mr. Curtis was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Charles D. Hammond Lodge and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons where he was a past Worshipful Master. Mr. Curtis was also an avid golfer and was a member of the Colonial Golf Club in Hart. He is survived by: Wife, Joyce; children, Gary W. (Mary) Curtis of Hart, Cheryl L. (Michael Blais) Curtis of N. Muskegon and Dayle (Nancy) Vanderwier of Fruitport; three grandchildren, Krystal, Cody and Daniel and one great-granddaughter, Rachel. He is also survived by: brothers, Milburn, John, James and Dan and sisters, Christine Brown, Shirline Scouten and Drexel Kalavitz. Memorial Service: will be held at the: The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444 231-798-1100 At 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 17, 2008 with Pastor Shane Prewitt officiating. Military Rites under the auspices of the Muskegon County Council of Veterans will honor his military service. Visitation: The family will greet friends and family at the funeral home Wednesday, 6-8 P.M. concluding with a Masonic Service at 7:30 P.M. Memorial Contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital will be appreciated.
