Chandra Yvette Western, 67, left this Earth for new life in Heaven on September 19, 2024, released at last from the cruelties of early onset dementia. In death, as in life, she was surrounded by her loving family who mourn her loss, but cherish her beautiful personality and a lifetime of precious memories.

Chandra was born June 19, 1957, in Fort Deposit, Ala., the first born daughter of Carl and Ruth Western. She came to Muskegon at the age of 10, when her parents moved to the area to pursue job opportunities with the Muskegon Heights Public Schools.

A graduate of Muskegon Catholic Central High School, Chandra earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University, majoring in economics and community development. She was hired right out of college by then-Gov. John H. Sununu of New Hampshire - and her career in community development was launched. She was gifted in her chosen field and was selected for post-graduate studies at Harvard University. Eventually she moved to Dumpries, Va., where she was a dedicated advocate for cities and community development, working until a decade ago when she became ill.

Outgoing and friendly, she kept in touch with her college friends, often tailgating at MSU football games and other gatherings through the years.

She was a member of Temple United Methodist Church in Muskegon Heights.

Survivors include her parents; her sister, Sabena Western of Okemos; an aunt and uncle, Al and Willie Mae Western of Huntsville, Ala.; an aunt, Willa Western of Detroit; several cousins; and a wide and loving circle of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. October 1, with the Rev. Gerald Hagens officiating, at Temple U.M.C., 2500 Jefferson, Muskegon Heights. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple U.M.C. Arrangements by Clock Funeral Home.
