Cathy Atkin Muskegon, Michigan Cathy Atkin, age 73, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, January 16, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on October 21, 1952, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Frances and Vern Whitchell. Cathy lived a life guided by deep love-for her family, her horses and especially her kitties. Though she was unable to pursue her passion for horses early in life, she never let go of the dream. In her 30s, alongside her devoted husband, Robert, she made that dream a reality. Together they owned and operated Whispering Willow Ranch in Twin Lake, Michigan, a riding, training and boarding stable that brought her immense joy. Cathy proudly showed her horses at numerous open shows and on the Appaloosa circuit, creating cherished memories that reflected her dedication and heart. In addition to her life with horses, Cathy dedicated more than 25 years of service to Mona Shores Public Schools, where she eventually retired. No matter where life led her, her greatest joy was always her family, whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. Cathy is survived by her loving husband of more than 60 years, Robert Atkin; her children, Scott Atkin, Roberta (Rusty) Pothoff, and Robin Atkin; and her grandchildren: Scott Doctor, Toby, and Cody Atkin; Emily (Garrit) Schultz; Makayla Swiatek (Zach); Tommy (Taya) Roswell; Sierra (Austin) Moore; Trey Davis (Jenna); and Janae Fisher (Rob). She is also survived by her cherished great-grandchildren: Guinevere Schultz; Maeve Bonter; Tommy and Maverick Roswell; and Baker Moore. Cathy leaves behind her sisters, Michelle Rogers and Dawn (Wes) Sander; as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Vern Whitchell. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations toward Cathy's cremation be made to Clock Funeral Home in Muskegon, Michigan. Cathy's kindness, quiet strength, and enduring love, will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
