Carol Ann Misner Broutman died peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2011 in Gainesville, Florida after living courageously for many years with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She is survived by her four daughters Leslie True (Olympia WA), Susan Knott (Traverse City MI), Judy Tison (Gainesville FL) and Amy Schultz (Trophy Club TX) and four grandchildren Devin True, Jamie True, Beth Knott and Jon Knott. Carol was born on December 1, 1922 in Muskegon, Michigan. She and her sisters Jean Mary and Betty were raised by their mother Ethel Misner to value education, hard work, the demonstration of faith through service, and above all, music. A graduate of the University of Michigan Honors College, Carol worked briefly in radio before marrying her high school sweetheart Stanford Arthur Broutman (1923-2009) shortly after the end of World War II. Throughout her life, Carol was involved in service to her community. She volunteered in her children's schools, as a hospital "pink lady" and as a Girl Scout troop leader. She served for years as a Sunday school teacher, Bible School leader, Methodist women's circle member, and trustee for Trinity United Methodist Church in DeLand, Florida. If ever there was a personification of the expression "busy hands are happy hands," it was Carol. She could solve the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink, cross-stitch, weave quantities of afghans, arrange flowers and her home artfully, prepare engaging lesson plans, work part-time for fun in a gift shop, write thoughtful notes and letters, conquer any foe in Scrabble, and complete a jigsaw puzzle in no time. Always in motion, Carol managed her busy family and life deftly and with order, character, creativity and wit. And truth be told, she was a better golfer than Stan, much to his chagrin. According to their wishes, a joint memorial service for Stan and Carol will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be directed to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004. Stanford (Stan) Arthur Broutman died from natural causes in Gainesville, Florida on Monday, January 12, 2009 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Gainesville, Florida); his sister Lana Kay (Oxford, Ohio) and husband Jerry Rosenberg; four daughters including Leslie (Olympia, Washington) and Earl True, Susan (Traverse City, Michigan) and Bruce Knott, Judy (Gainesville, Florida) and J.L. Tison, and Amy (Trophy Club, Texas) and Brian Schultz; and four grandchildren including Devin True, Jamie True, Elizabeth Knott and Jonathan Knott. Long-time resident of DeLand, Florida, Stan was born on April 15, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. Later, his family moved to Muskegon, Michigan where he met, fell in love with, and married Carol Ann Misner on February 6, 1946. A World War II veteran and two-time graduate from the University of Michigan, Stan built his career working for Brunswick Corporation which, eventually, brought he and his family to DeLand in 1973. He retired from Brunswick in 1985 and moved with wife Carol to Gainesville in 2000. Together, Stan and Carol raised a family of four, raised four different kinds of lawns in four different kinds of states (Michigan, Nebraska, Virginia and Florida), built furniture, enjoyed musical theater and playing cards, worked extremely hard, exuded quiet patriotism, valued education, and played a lot of golf.
