Carl Myers was a soft spoken, easy going man who filled his life with the people he loved, and spent his time doing the activities that brought him the most joy. He was a great fix-it man, builder, and hunter, and enjoyed passing his skills down to his children. Carl took great joy and pride in being the best father, husband, and friend that he could be. The year 1924 was a quiet time in history, nestled in those good old years between WWI and the Great Depression. An era which would be called "The Roaring Twenties", jazz and blues were just beginning to make their debuts, professional football was in its infancy, and the experimental prohibition was the talk of the town. In Grand Haven Michigan, Isaac Frank and Anna (Andersen) Myers were busy preparing their home for the birth of their first child. One hot summer day, on July 31, 1924, Carl Joseph Myers was welcomed into the world. Carl lead a normal, typical childhood together with his family. He eventually became the older brother to Louis and Maude. He and his family farmed, though his father was also a factory worker. His mother worked as a custodian for Agnew School, and also worked to create a loving home for her family. As a youngster, Carl, like all good American boys at that time, enjoyed playing baseball, and also loved hunting, a love which would maintain throughout his life. After attending school through the 8th grade, Carl decided to serve his country. At a young age he joined the Navy and became Seaman 1st Class. While he was serving, he developed a close relationship with Ed Mouwer. Some time after he had returned home from serving, he and his friends took an evening out to go dancing. While there, he met a lovely young woman named Dorothy "Dort" Roselyn Bakale. It was love at first sight. On September 4, 1948, Carl married the love of his life at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake, Michigan. He always considered this one of the greatest days of his life, closely followed by their 50th wedding anniversary. The young couple soon grew into a young family composed of three sons, Carl, Jr., Ken, and Kurt, and a daughter, Cathy. As a parent, Carl was quiet, loving and giving. He enjoyed passing his skills down to his children, and taught his sons how to hunt and build. Their hunting trips together created lasting memories for his boys. Family would always continue to be the most important thing in Carl's life. They would enjoy many cats, dogs, and cattle throughout their lives, and loved going to the cabin near Kalkaska. Carl was even able to spend time with those he loved through his job. When an early job affected his health adversely causing him to change jobs, he became a long-haul truck driver who traveled from coast to coast. On many of these trips, Dorothy accompanied him, and they were able to see the country together. Carl retired in the mid 90's. In his retirement, Carl and Dort would enjoy spending more time up at the cabin, and making occasional trips to the casino. Always a builder, Carl loved to build things for his wife, and took great pride in his accomplishments. Carl loved spending time with his family, which grew quite large. He was a doting grandfather to 17 grandchildren and great grandfather to seven great grandchildren. He was always kind to his family, and more than willing to spoil his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carl loved to have his family surrounding him, and always looked forward to the Christmas Holidays when everyone would come together. Carl always put his family first in his life. He loved spending time with his children, and was a devoted father and husband, and a warm and kind grandfather and great-grandfather. Always soft spoken and easy going, Carl was a wonderful example for his children will always live on in their hearts. Carl J. Myers died Friday, October 3, 2008.
