On the morning of February 11th, 2020, Alvin Clyde Woodland (Al Woodland) passed away peacefully in his home at Chippewa Lake, Michigan at the age of 91. He was born August 3rd, 1928 in Onondaga, Michigan to Ralph and Kathryn Woodland. He spent his childhood years in Lansing and graduated from Everett High School in 1947. In 1949, Al married Joyce Andrus and shortly after moved to Leslie. While raising his family he also owned and operated Woodland Lawn & Garden and followed in his grandfather's footsteps as sexton of Woodlawn Cemetery. While in Leslie he served as president of the Leslie School Board, was a volunteer firefighter and was involved in numerous community activities. In his later years to remain active he worked as a meat cutter at Kroger & L&L Shop-rites and co-owned Chippewa Lake Bar. More than anything, Al loved being together with family and a community of close friends. He was generous with all he had and, for decades, hosted countless friends at his cottage and enjoyed all things lake life - boating, waterskiing, snowmobiling, playing euchre, building, tinkering and socializing. Al will be remembered as a "character" - a sharp wisecracker and great storyteller with an incredible memory for detail. All who knew him will hold dear his vibrancy, mischievousness, kind-heart and infectious laugh. Alvin is preceded in death by his wife Joyce, father, mother, and brother Richard. He is survived by his three children, Greg Woodland (Kathy), Gail Woodland and Mary McCarthy (Casey); grandchildren Katie Dimas (Chris), Lance Woodland (Kelly), Cassie McCarthy (Ben) and Clearie McCarthy; his great-grandchildren Brody Dimas, Avery Dimas, and Sawyer Woodland, his brother William Woodland (Judy); special longtime friend Esther Troman, sister-in-law Annette Underwood (Ernie) and many nieces, nephews and close friends. A public memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Leslie at 204 E Bellevue St, Leslie, MI 49251 on March 7th at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund online at https://heartlandhospicefund.org or charity of your choice.
