Alfred "Al" Spurgat

Alfred "Al" Spurgat SPURGAT, MR. ALFRED "AL" Holt, MI (Formerly of Muskegon) Alfred "Al" Spurgat, age 97, died in Holt, Mich., January 22, 2006. He was buoyed in his life and his final hours by the belief that there is hope in the sustaining grace and love of God. Alfred was born Sept. 25, 1908 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Adolph and Pauline Spurgat, recent immigrants from Europe. In 1931, he married at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids to Eleanor Stanley, who preceded him in death January of 2005, after 73 years of marriage. They lived most of their life in Muskegon, where he retired from Continental Motors in 1972. For many years, Alfred was known in Muskegon for his active interest in Boy Scout leadership and was the Scoutmaster for Troop 18 on Jackson Hill for 15 years. He was also active in the Muskegon Stamp Club and was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He is survived by his three children, Kenneth (Diana) Spurgat of Concord, CA, Marilyn (Gordon) Schafer of Mason, and Cynthia (Emmanuel) Jacobson of West Salem, WI; six grandchildren, Leah Schafer, Lori Schafer (Bob Pierce), David Schafer (Diane DeBono), Scott (Thippi) Fleckenstein, Kimberly Spurgat, Christopher Spurgat; and six great-grandchildren, Erin Fredrickson, Rachel Fredrickson, Allison Pierce, Matthew Pierce, Mahlevanh Fleckenstein, and Benjamin Fleckenstein. Fifth of nine children, he is also survived by sisters, Dorothy Anglin of Grand Rapids and Ella Wittig of Stevensville, MI; sisters-in-law, Margaret Spurgat of Delaware and Beverly Stanley of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. The family expresses appreciation to his personal care givers, Sandy, Belinda, and Cindy, for their kindness and attention to Alfred. There will be no visitation. The Rev. Dr. Leah Schafer, pastor at Hope Lutheran Church, Fairfax, VA, will officiate at a private burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt, MI.
