Alan Joseph Young was born on February 28, 1960, in Muskegon, MI and was the seventh child of eight, of Mary Jane and Basil Young. He grew up in Muskegon, graduating from Mona Shores High School in 1978 and went on to college at Central Michigan University graduating in 1983, majoring in business. After graduation he relocated to Novi, Michigan and then transferred to Dallas, Texas. He met Ruth Walker, the love of his life in Dallas, and they married in 2008. Together they created a life and home that was so much more than four walls and a roof. Their home became a meeting place for friends and family, a vacation place for kids and dogs, and a sanctuary to all who entered the doors. They created the type of home where you always felt welcomed and knew you were loved and valued. Alan lived and he loved. No matter what life threw at him, he lived his life to the fullest, found the silver lining in every situation, and loved deeply. Whether it was playing cards with friends, golfing, riding his motorcycle, snorkeling in his pool to clean it, having deep intellectual conversations about finances or politics, dog sitting Blacky for his neighbors, or going with Ruth on their "hurrications", he did it with a smile on his face and always put others first. Alan fought his first battle with cancer in 2014 and emerged victorious. He slayed cancer, all the while staying positive and strong with Ruth by his side. After 7 years of being in remission, he received the unsettling news no one ever wants to hear...the cancer was back. Alan prepared for another battle, ready to face whatever came his way. He fought valiantly, but the beast of cancer was too strong of an opponent. Although Alan is no longer here with us physically, his spirit lives on in all those he loved. Alan is survived by his wife, Ruth, his 3 brothers, Gregory Young of Muskegon, MI, David (Karri) Young of Hudsonville, MI, and Stephen (Nancy) Young of Hurst, TX and 4 sisters Sandy (Tom) Nuyens of Spring Lake, MI, Linda (Bob) Dickey of Plano, TX, Susan (Bob) Baglien of Muskegon, MI, and Sharlene (Bill) Daniels of Allendale, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Jane and Basil Young and a nephew, Joshua Dickey. Friends and family are invited to join together to share stories and celebrate his life on Saturday June 18, from 12-3PM at the new Coopersville Brewery at the Coopersville exit.
