Abel "Abe" Bulthuis, age 83, of Spring Lake passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. He was born August 7, 1924,in LaGrange, IL, to Tony and Minnie (VanKampen) Bulthuis, and he married the former Jeanette DeMaa on November 1, 1946, in Illinois. Abe has been a resident of the Tri-Cities area for 40 years and was owner and operator of Grand Garbage which later merged with Haven Garbage and became Grand Valley Sani-Serv. He was a member of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church where he formerly served as elder, deacon, and a member of the building and maintenance and grounds committees. He also served as an election official and as a board member at Liberty Woods. Abe enjoyed golfing and achieved four holes-in-one. He also enjoyed reading and watching his granddaughters excel in sports. Abe will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Jeanette; his son, Tim (Sarah) Bulthuis of Nunica; five grandchildren including Betsy and Cassidy; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Mae (Hank) Ipema of Palos Heights, IL, and Peggy Voss of Orland Park, IL; his sister-in-law, Pearl Bulthuis of Holland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Kathleen Polanek and Karen J. Kurtz; his son-in-law, Neal Polanek; a grandson, Tony; and two brothers, Peter and Tom. The service for Abe will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007, at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church with Rev. James VanderMeiden, Rev. Jay Pruim, and Rev. Drew Sweetman officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 9, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake. Interment will be in Spring Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church or to Bethany Christian Services are appreciated.
